Old Town Shows Off, Putting the Shows On!

Walking the Fish costumes

The Old Town put on its usual superb programme of events during August, although this year over a two week period to prevent the Carnival clashing with Airbourne, in Eastbourne.
As always, it was the bizarre mixture of the sublime and the ridiculous, from art exhibitions to the sea boot race, from coffee mornings to the bike race (riding a butcher's bike up one of the steepest hills in the Old Town, sitting on a 10/- note), and from a garden railway exhibition to a pram race.

And, of course, the Carnival Procession was the climax for many, with a new, longer, route this year, taking it back into the town centre.  The weather stayed kind, and the procession was thought by many to be the best for a long time.  Carnival Day had its traditional finish, with a fireworks display by Hastings' own Renegade Pyrotechnics.

What sometimes gets forgotten in the celebrations is that the whole fortnight is organised entirely by volunteers, from organisations across the Old Town and, indeed, the whole of Hastings and beyond.  We are very grateful indeed for all that they do, both in organising the events themselves, and for the huge amounts of money they make for local charities.
