Leaders Introduction

Jeremy Birch - leader of the Council

"Hastings has shaken off the sad and seedy image that haunted it ten years ago... hard work by the local authority, plus massive private and public sector investment has seen it rise, phoenixlike, from the ashes.. a university centre, a new railway station opened just before Christmas, the seafront has been massively improved."

This is what the Sunday Mirror had to say about our town earlier this year.  It may be exaggerating the ‘before’ picture of Hastings but the description of what is happening in the here and now is spot on.  This addition of About carries some of the ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos so we can all remind ourselves of just how dramatic some of the changes have been in just a couple of years.

The programme to revitalise the town will unfold over ten years and more.  So the improvements so far are just the start.

And their purpose is to give Hastings the image that will attract new investment, new jobs, new visitors and new residents too " an all round new prosperity for the town.

But it’s not just these grand, physical projects that will determine the future of our town.  There is a central role for all the vital activities that local organisations and local people are involved in.  This edition of About covers just some of them"

the work of our Young Person’s Council, the success of the council’s Tressell Training Unit offering basic skills to youngsters, the improvements at our Country Park especially for disabled access, the outstanding art feature in the Alexandra Park boating lake.

Large and small projects, the very active community life in our town all are part of reviving Hastings.  About tries to reflect all this within its pages.
