Every year thousands of foreign language students flock to seaside towns for a summer of learning.
For most students the weeks are a happy mix of sightseeing, shopping and improving their English. Hastings alone attracts some 35,000 students all year round from across the world to its large number of language schools.
To make sure the town maintains its reputation as a safe and fun centre of learning, the various agencies involved in student education and safety formed the Hastings Overseas Students Advisory Council (HOSAC).
Partners include Sussex Police, the Streets Ahead project, Hastings Borough Council and 17 other language schools, tour operators and accommodation providers. HOSAC members work together to make sure students are well looked after, maintain good relations with residents and businesses and publicise the good name of Hastings. The group holds two major meetings a year and fortnightly student leader meetings during the summer.
They have covered areas such as educational standards, school premises, leisure and social activities, student welfare, accommodation and transport.
HOSAC members are entitled to active promotion through the Council, student leader and teacher workshops, advice and membership to the Sussex Police Operation Columbus campaign, exhibition attendance and literature/street maps for students.
For more information about HOSAC, contact the Council’s marketing and communications department on 01424 451101 or e-mail marketingadmin@hastings.gov.uk
