Some of the key elements in the regeneration strategy aim to create top-class education and training opportunities, to generate new jobs, attract students from across the UK and overseas and boost the local economy. To begin making this a reality a number of key groups have come together, from the worlds of business, education and the government and charitable sectors.
These before and after pictures are proof positive of some of the work that has been going on and the growing tide of change sweeping across Hastings.
Now at the heart of the education and skills initiative is the University Centre Hastings (UCH) with its fresh modern façade. The building was opened by the Minister for Higher Education and accepted its first intake of students in 2003.
UCH, managed by the University of Brighton, is the UK's first 'University Centre' - a facility offering a range of courses, run and validated by some of the best universities in the UK and internationally. Those education providers already offering courses through UCH include the University of Brighton, Hastings College of Arts and Technology, the University of Sussex and the Open University.
The first point of call for many visitors is the train station, which was in need of desperate renovation and now stands proudly as a gateway to Hastings and transport hub with its combination of rail and bus travel.
Moving down from the station we see another feather in the cap of the regeneration planners in the form of the Creative Media Centre in Robertson Street. This building opened in March 2004 and provides prestigious serviced office suites, cutting edge technology, business support and networking opportunities for small businesses. Phase two of the building is due to open this summer.
