Youth

Sport4u

Thousands of local young people from the age of ten to 16 enjoyed this Summer's Olympic-themed Sport4U events. We took all kinds of sports into all kinds of places, from supermarket car parks to playing fields, and concluded with a fantastic Olympics Final Day at William Parker School, where everybody taking part got a medal.

Councillor Jay Kramer, portfolio holder for Leisure, said:

"Sport4U is going from strength to strength. It's really inspiring to see so many young people getting involved and  having so much fun. We're running sessions five nights a week across the town throughout the winter so I'd urge anybody who hasn't already signed up to come along and see what they're missing."

Behind the Stats: Scott’s Story

Look closer and you'll find that Sport4U's success isn't just about statistics. Two years ago, on a rainy Tuesday night, fifteen year old Scott Vickers went to a Sport4U session in Tesco's car park for a kickabout. Now 17, Scott is one of several young people who've been sponsored by Sport4U to take the coveted Community Sports Leadership Award. The award gives young people an insight into what it takes to be a sports coach and for Scott, it's been a key stepping stone on the path to achieving his dream:

"Kids can come to Sport4U for some fun but if they want to they can take things further. It's given me this qualification and helped me get into college to do a sports degree. I'm on my way to having a career and being able to provide for my baby daughter."
