Reviving Hastings involves us all. To create that new future we are all striving for, we need those image-changing major new projects like the new station, the media centre in Robertson Street, the rebuilding of Ore Valley or the housing renewal in Central St Leonards, but we also need the activity and involvement of the people of the town.
This current edition of About shows just what an active town Hastings is.
This year’s carnival was a real success. Then, a month later, came the weekend for street theatre and street performers as part of the Council’s Coastal Currents festival. This culminated in the breathtaking Bollywood-style procession and open-air performance by Runga Rung.
Read about the opportunities for activity offered by the Council through the Sport4U programme and the play days in the park.
Literally thousands of Hastings residents have been involved in these different activities over the summer months and it’s all recorded in the pages of About.
And About continues to highlight the Council’s work to give Hastings a new clean, green and safe image and to improve the quality of life for everyone. This edition focuses on energy efficiency and composting and there is the community safety questionnaire that can help to ensure the strategy to make the town safer has residents’ input.
When there is so much activity and commitment by the Council, the Task Force, other local organisations and most of all by townspeople themselves how can we fail to revitalise Hastings? About gives voice to everything that is going on.
Councillor Jeremy Birch
Leader of Hastings Borough Council

Hastings was once again a magnet for tourists this summer, with thousands flocking to the town for a taste of the English seaside at its best.
The information centres recorded a bumper number of hotel bookings, with accommodation sold out on several weekends.
Councillor John Humphries said:
“It’s been really good to see the town so busy. It was nice to see so many people in town, enjoying the beach, seafront, town centre and Old Town.
Tourism is a major source of income with up to 425,000 staying visitors each year, a tenth of which come from overseas.”
Figures from a recent report, carried out by Tourism South East, also revealed more than 2.6 million people come to Hastings as day visitors.
Holiday-makers spend around £137 million, with overseas visitors contributing some £18 million to this figure. Hastings tourism directly supports some 4,000 jobs in the town.
