About Hastings

The streets became a riot of colour and fun when Hastings Old Town Carnival hit town in August.

In this first in a series of photographs from the Hastings Museum and Art Gallery archives, we look back at Hastings over the last hundred years and in this edition, it’s all about Hastings Carnival.

The caption on the back of this photograph reads:

“At the Hastings Carnival, July 7, 1951. Although there were no donkeys on the sands, these youngsters enjoyed themselves just sitting on this model donkey.”

Were you one of the youngsters sitting on the donkey or in the rest of this group of children?

If you’ve got any memories about the day, drop About a line and help shed some light on this photo.

Hastings seniors make their voices heard.

Hastings Borough Council is teaming up with Age Concern Hastings; Help the Aged and a determined group of local residents to establish the Hastings Seniors’ Forum (HSF).

The aim of the HSF is to give older people a stronger voice and opportunity to shape the future of their town. HSF members will work in partnership with the local authority and other agencies, so decision makers get to hear about the issues that really matter to older people.

Transport, health, housing and community safety are high on the list of issues that effect senior people and HSF members hope to be right at the heart of discussions.

Several open meetings have been planned throughout the year to highlight the positive work done by the seniors and the positive aspects of later life.

So far so good

The HSF has successfully launched the first edition of its quarterly newsletter packed full of information about support groups, community groups, letters and ideas. The newsletter is put together by a group of volunteers at the WRVS in St. Leonards, trained by Hastings CommIT.

Members have also been involved in a special East Sussex County Council conference - All Our Futures - about improving public services for seniors.

The official launch of the HSF was held at the White Rock Theatre on September 30, funded by the Community Empowerment Fund.  There were guest speakers, useful information from other agencies and community groups, as well as some freebies for people to take away.

If you would like to find out more or how to get involved with the HSF or would like to receive a free copy of the Seniors’ Forum Newsletter please use the contact details below.
