The Community Sports Leader Award (CSLA) is a nationally recognized qualification for people who want to get into leading sports activities.
There are several versions of the CSLA on offer from teenagers to adults who are offered the Adults Other Than Teachers (AOTT) certificate.
This year around 50 young people took part in the Council organized Schools CSLA run by the Sports Development team along with William Parker School Sports College and Hastings School Sports Partnership.
They completed the award over several condensed teaching days, notching up between 20 and 30 hours in tuition and a further 10 hours carrying out voluntary work in the community.
Council staff and teachers coach students. Modules included how to organize sports sessions, disability awareness, fitness and health & safety.
In April the groups received recognition of their hard work at the Town Hall where they received their completion certificates from deputy leader of the Council Jay Kramer and former Mayor councillor Phil Scott.
Cllr Jay Kramer, portfolio holder for Leisure and Culture, said:
“All of those who went on the courses have really achieved a huge amount and gained some invaluable skills. As well as learning the practical skills of leading sports activities the courses are a great way of developing confidence and tapping into your own skills.”
Anyone interested in signing up for a CSLA course or just after more information should contact Sports Development on 01424 781189.
The Hastings African Party drew a thousand-strong crowd to Alexandra Park on Saturday, July 3.
The event was organised by the Hastings Sierra Leone Friendship Link with the support of Hastings Borough Council.
Entertainment came from Adanti and Nana Tsiboe with Mr Lurve, Ambrose Harcourt MCing the event.
More than 1,000 visitors flocked to the event and had the chance to sample authentic African cuisine and chat to the large ex-pat community from Sierra Leone, who travelled down from London for the occasion.
The event was endorsed by the Headwoman of Hastings Sierra Leone, who sent her best wishes for the occasion.
Council leader Cllr Jeremy Birch pledged on-going support to the town and organiser Cllr Phil Scott spoke to the crowds.
Cllr Scott said he was delighted at the number of people who attended the event, despite the foreboding weather earlier in the day.
He said:
“I was particularly pleased to welcome two coach loads of ex-pat Sierra Leoners from London. It was great to see so many people from different cultures enjoying themselves together and of course all profits from the evening will go towards the Hastings Sierra Leone Friendship Link, helping to re-build the war-torn village of Hastings, Sierra Leone”.
