Blue Route likely for Bexhill-Hastings link road

Hastings looks set to get the modified blue link road after cabinet members at East Sussex County Council voted in favour of the route.

After months of planning and consultation with local people, environment groups and businesses the route was given the green light on June 8th.

The planned link road will play a key role in long term regeneration plans for the town and will make commuting between Bexhill and Hastings a safer and less stressful experience.

On top of reducing traffic along the clogged A259, it is hoped the link road will help open up areas along the route to new housing and business opportunities.

Thousands of people were sent questionnaires on the proposed routes and more than 2,500 responded; hundreds more attended a public exhibition where the plans were put on display.

While the blue and orange routes were given the most favourable reception, the blue route was eventually picked as the most environmentally friendly of the two.

Cllr. Godfrey Daniel, responsible for transport and the environment for Hastings Borough Council, said:

“From the consultation, a massive 84% of local people are in favour of a new link road. We have chosen a favoured route and now we are working together to get a favourable response from the Government so that our aspiration can become a reality”.

A bid for funding for the new link road will be made to central Government in July, with a decision expected by Christmas.

Modifications have been made and include:

  • Modification to the blue and brown routes to pass north of Upper Wilting Farm with a bridge over Crowhurst Road to help reduce rat running through Crowhurst and the impact of the road on Upper Wilting Farm
  • Modification to the blue route to the north of Actons Farm allowing the working farm to be retained intact
  • Modification to the Powdermill stream valley to enhance natural drainage and contribute to resolving flooding issues in Crowhurst
  • Reduction in the level of routes and in some cases the types of structures to minimise the visual impact, limit the impact of noise and pollution generally and specifically to reduce the impact of the blue route on the setting of Adams Farm
  • Development of junction types to give public transport priority and improve crossing facilities for cyclists and pedestrians

If the Cabinet supports the recommendation, a formal bid for funding will be made at the end of July with the results of the bid announced in December.
