Green Gongs

Six of the town's companies were recognised for their environmental awareness in December by the Hastings Sustainable Business Partnership (HSBP) and the Hastings & St Leonards Chamber of Commerce.  The winners were ABC Family Nursery, ACR Services, Judges Postcards, New Directions, Plastica and Stamco Timber while building contractor George Stone and pickle maker B & DFL were highly commended.

Outstanding initiatives included ACR Services' pioneering promotional work on the latest energy-saving technologies, Judges Postcards' switch to a renewable energy electricity supplier, care home management company New Directions' energy efficient boiler and Plastica's success in recycling over a third of their waste.

The Chair of Hastings & St Leonards Chamber of Commerce and Managing Director of local company Marshall Tufflex, said:

"These companies are winning twice, not only are they helping the environment and saving money, they're getting an award for it!"

Several companies also achieved certificates for taking part in free Hastings Sustainable Business Partnership "Environmental Reviews" and making environmental improvements: AB Electrical & Security Company, Bo Peep Public House, Dyer Commercial, Grand Hotel, Hastings Fishmarket Enterprises, Hastings Furniture Service, Impact Design & Print, Lansdowne Hotel, Old Hastings House, Summerfields Leisure Centre and Table Leg Company.

ABC Family Nursery was recently presented with another award for environmental achievement when they became "Sustainable Business" runner-up at the Sussex Business Awards 2003.  Excellent practice at the Nursery includes their roof-mounted solar panels to heat water.

Stamco Timber were also finalists in the SEEDA Sustainable Business Awards 2003.  The Company Secretary said:

"We want to introduce further changes to have a positive impact on the environment and on our business, which may also give us a better chance of winning next year!" Stamco's good practice includes baling waste sawdust for use as animal bedding.

Chair of the Hastings Sustainable Business Partnership Steering Group Councillor Paul Silverson said:

"I would like to congratulate these companies.  It is certainly extremely encouraging that they want to go on to greater heights."

Hastings Sustainable Business Partnership gives local businesses free help to improve their environmental practice and achieve associated savings.  It's funded by Hastings Borough Council, Hastings Regeneration Partnership and the EU European Regional Development Fund.
