A recent MORI poll claimed that 67% of people have never met their local councillor, 64% cannot name a local councillor and just 19% would think of approaching one if they needed help.
To try and reverse these statistics at a local level, we're one of the first Local Authorities to sign up to Councillor.info. This new initiative gives each of our 32 councillors the chance to build their own website so residents can have all day and everyday access to them at the click of a mouse.
Councillors can give their residents regular briefings, either through their site or by email. They can also promote local events, surgery times, consultations and gather feedback from residents.
Councillor Peter Chowney, portfolio holder responsible for Communications, said:
"We want everybody to have the chance to talk to us and this is just another way of achieving that. Even residents who don't have the internet at home can still use their councillor's website for free through our PC kiosk in the Hastings Information Centre, Priory Meadow."
