White Rock Gardens Upgraded

Plans to improve facilities at White Rock Gardens have been given the go-ahead and could be made by Summer 2004.

Following consultation with residents last year, a masterplan was developed for the whole of White Rock Gardens.  As a result the skate park and BMX area have been upgraded and the next phase of work will concentrate on three areas above the gardens, next to the car park and below the disused bowling greens.

This will see:

  • The basketball court resurfaced with new fencing and lighting installed
  • New lighting and fencing around the skate park area, including on the grassed area next to it, which is likely to become an extension to skate park at a later stage
  • The upper tennis court fenced, floodlit and resurfaced to make it into a multi-use games area
  • There are also plans to install a tennis bubble

The improvements are part of the Council's commitment to making sure that young people can enjoy more and better facilities town-wide.

Councillor Jay Kramer, Cabinet Member responsible for Leisure & Culture, said:

"Last year, we held consultation days with residents and young people, which really steered the development of the White Rock Gardens Masterplan.  It's split into three phases starting with the projects that are featured here.  We hope that these will be in place by Summer 2004.
"There's a lack of space for young people to use and improve their sporting talents in.  By developing areas all over the town we can ensure that they can practice and meet their friends in safe places with good facilities.  We're currently working on a Youth Strategy as it is about time that the needs of young people are put high up the agenda so that as the town develops their views are valued and they can make sure their needs are met too."

The U14 Hastings Arrows Basketball Club, Women's National League Team take on league favourites, Haringey on Sunday 14th December from 11am - 1pm.  Arrows are hoping to make this their second win in a row in their first season at national league level.

Basketball Improvements - your views wanted

Council officers are inviting everyone interested in basketball to join them for a site visit at the White Rock Gardens outdoor court (next to the skate park) at 2.00pm on Sunday December 14 (after the Hastings Arrows game) to discuss how the court could be improved.  This includes resurfacing, new fencing, posts and backboards.

Council officers are keen to hear ideas from local basketball players, coaches or interested individuals who can help make sure these improvements suit as many users as possible.  For more information call the Youth Sports Development Officer, telephone 01424 781189, or just turn up and have your say on the day.
