It has been said that those who do not remember history are destined to repeat it. So in Hastings, the annual Holocaust Memorial Day will again be held at St Mary-in-the-Castle, on Saturday 24 January 2004, as part of a national commemoration of the Holocaust and more recent genocides. The service will be an opportunity not only to remember the past but also to look at why such things happen and, more importantly, how they can be prevented.
This year there will be contributions from local children who have been studying the Holocaust at school. Others taking part will include those who have been victims of so-called "ethnic-cleansing" in various parts of the world.
Previous services have proved to be very moving and have touched people of different faiths as well as those who have none. An event that has drawn an increasing number of people each year, it is being arranged again by the Council of Christians and Jews, the Hastings and District Jewish Society and Christian Friends of Israel with the support of Hastings Borough Council.
Members of the public are welcome to be part of this memorable occasion. Tickets are free but must be obtained in advance and in writing from the Information Centre, Hastings Town Hall enclosing a stamped self-addressed envelope.
