Hastings Market has been set up by Hastings & St Leonards Five a Day programme to increase the availability of locally grown produce in Hastings and encourage people to eat more fruit and veg. It will support local farmers and small businesses.
The outreach team from the East Sussex Food and Health partnership have attended the market to do cookery demos and give out taste samples of delicious recipes using locally grown fruits, including Poached Pears and Blackberry Blinis. Stall space is offered free of charge to local community groups who wish to publicise their work.
The market has been set up with assistance from Hastings Town Centre Management and Hastings Borough Council, and has also received lots of useful advice and support from Action in Rural Sussex and other farmers market co-ordinators from across Sussex and Kent. The first market had eight stalls but by there are now up to 18 stalls selling a variety of fruit, vegetables, wine, cheese, meat, baked goods, crafts and other locally made products. There are still pitches available and we would be particularly keen to have more vegetables, preserves and plants.
