Anti social drinkers in the town centres are being warned to 'behave or you could be barred from every bar in town', as part of a new scheme to tackle alcohol related crime, violence and public disorder in Hastings & St Leonards.
The newly launched BarWatch is being led by the town's licensees with active support from Town Centre Management, Hastings Borough Council (as the licensing authority), and Sussex Police.
All the partners are working together to create a 18 hour a day, 7 days a week economy, and a safer and more attractive environment in Hastings at night. According to surveys, some people find the town centre intimidating at night, and making them feel safe and the town more attractive is a top priority of the initiative.
Under the BarWatch scheme, troublemakers who are barred from one will be barred from all premises participating in the scheme. Initially, individuals who are charged or cautioned in relation to violent or drink related incidents or anti-social behaviour will be given an immediate one month interim ban, which may then be extended for up to a year. At the heart of the initiative is an efficient and rapid communication system between licensees, police and town centre security, enabling quick recognition of troublemakers and a speedy response to incidents in and around licensed premises.
Councillor Trevor Webb, Cabinet Member responsible for Safety, said:
"The new BarWatch scheme is being modelled on very successful initiatives elsewhere. The Council and Sussex Police are throwing their full support behind the licensees and intend to enforce this scheme actively. The BarWatch scheme will reduce the incidence of drink related violence and disorder and make our town a safer, more enjoyable environment for everyone in the community"
Chair of 1066 Licensees Gina Sexton, said: "Licensees of Hastings & St Leonards are banding together in partnership with Sussex Police and Hastings Borough Council to operate Bar Watch against all disorderly behaviour to provide a safer and enjoyable environment for all."
