Seafront Triffids

Two Mexican desert plants dwarfed lampposts on the seafront during the summer, by sprouting to a whopping 30 foot as they prepared to flower.

The two triffid-like plants are called Agave and take an amazing 30 years to flower, producing bright yellow flowers.  There were other Agavae plants along the seafront but none as large as these.

Aboricultural officers in Hastings Council kept a close eye on the plants, watching them grow and then flower during August.  Sadly, the plants die after flowering.
Agave survive here because of the warm winters, but officers have never known them flower before and are keen to hear from anyone who remembers seeing them flower.
