Filsham Reedbed is the largest reedbed in Sussex and a project, managed by Sussex Wildlife Trust and funded by Biffaward with contributions from Hastings Borough Council, Restore UK, Sussex Ornithological Society, the Environment Agency and other partners, has improved access for visitors to the area dramatically.
Visitors can now stroll along the 225 metres of boardwalks into the very heart of the reedbed habitat and view the site from a special platform. A new footbridge has been constructed across the Combe Haven river which allows access to the reedbed from Bulverhythe recreation ground. New signs have been installed, giving information about the site and its unique flora and fauna.
Habitat improvements have included widening the ditch system and installing new sluice gates to control the water levels in different parts of the site, a feature essential to be able to manage the cutting of the reeds. The plant life of the ditches has benefited by this new management with rare plants such as frogbit and bladderwort now reappearing after a long absence. Birds which can only be found in reedbed such a bearded tits, sedge warblers and cetis warblers are also breeding in increasing numbers.
Councillor Jay Kramer, Cabinet Member responsible for Leisure and Culture, said: "This project has been a great example of the Council, Sussex Wildlife Trust and Biffaward and others working together to enhance one of the town's fantastic greenspaces for everyone to enjoy." "Clearing ditches and restoring the reed fen means that Filsham is now a prime site for the rare bladderwort and other plants. Bearded tits have increased dramatically and there are more waders and wildfowl at the site. By increasing access to the site, including making the boardwalk wheelchair accessible, it is hoped to encourage visitors and residents to enjoy this wonderful area."
The project has been part funded by Biffaward, a multi-million pound environment fund managed by the RSNC, which utilises landfill tax credits donated by Biffa Waste Services.
