The Country Park is one of the town's greatest assets. It spans 300 acres of land across cliff tops and dipping down through glens. The park provides a natural habitat to a plethora of wildlife, including dormice and badgers, and a variety of plants can also be found there.
The Hastings Country Park Volunteer Ranger Service, along with the Council's Rangers take full credit for that.
The volunteer team is currently made up of forty-five individuals from all walks of life. They share one ambition to preserve, enhance and promote the Country Park for the enjoyment of visitors and residents in the town, and for future generations to enjoy.
A space so big needs a large amount of care and time taken over it. The rangers spend a lot of their time concentrating on countryside management - hedge laying, gorse management, building and repairing footways and bridges.
But they are not just behind the scenes grooming the park for our enjoyment. They also act as information points for the public, give talks and lectures to various groups and keep a sharp eye out for vandalism.
They also record and monitor all the wildlife at the site. All the data about plants and animals in the park gets put in to national databases.
After all that is done, many of them get involved in the frequent events held there. These have included kite flying, torchlight walks, fun days and conservation days.
The Country Park is a beautiful and thriving environment - thanks to the dedication of these volunteers. If you would like to play a part in preserving this important park and get involved in the volunteer ranger scheme please telephone the Country Park Rangers on 01424 813225
