Girls' Football

More than 120 girls took part in Hastings United Ladies' first community soccer tournament at William Parker School in May.

The tournament was held on May 16th and organised by William Parker Sports College, the Council's Sports Development team and the Hastings Schools Sports Partnership.  It was financially supported by Communities Against Drugs, and attracted eighteen teams from local schools and community groups.

Battle and Langton School took the Under-11s prize but needed to win a penalty shoot-out to separate them from fellow finalists West St Leonards after a thrilling 1-1 draw.  Helenswood School won both the older age group competitions, with Sport 4U St Leonards taking the runners-up spot in the 11-13s category and Positive Futures in the over 13s.

Three Sport4U teams and one from Positive Futures entered the tournament, their teams being organised during their weekly sports sessions.  For many of the girls involved it was their first time playing organised football.

20 young women from the tournament have since been invited to take part in training sessions for the Sussex Youth Games, which is a county event co-ordinated locally by the Council's Sports Development team.  A final team of nine will represent Hastings in Girls Football, at this year's Sussex Youth Games to be held in Horsham on Sunday 8th June.

Commenting on the day, Ladies Club Chair, Sue Demeza said, "The response has been tremendous.  The opportunities for girls to play football may still be limited but they are improving all the time.  We are delighted to be making our contribution to promoting sport for girls and young women".
Girls of any age from 9 upwards interested in taking up football with Hastings United Ladies can find out more by contacting Sue on 01424 854040.

Sport 4U CSLA course

Nine young people have completed a 25 hour 'Community Sports Leader Award'. The course was organised after a number of older teenagers who take part in the Sport4U sessions around the town, told the Council's sports development team they were interested in leading sports sessions themselves.

The young people covered topics ranging from planning fitness sessions to organising sessions for all abilities and also gained a certified First Aid qualification.  Their new qualification will insure and qualify them to help lead future sports sessions.  The recruits have already volunteered their services at a recent half-term sports camp as well as a young women's football tournament.

A local BMX rider, who has been coaching 'flatland' skills as part of the Sport 4U and Positive Futures sports programmes, which takes BMX bikes out to various areas around the town, also took part in the courses.

More CSLA courses will follow in the future, as will the Council led Sports Coach UK workshops, which are aimed at new and experienced coaches.  For more details on any of these courses please contact the Council's Sports Development Team on 781122 or e-mail sportsdevelopment@hastings.gov.uk

'Do it' in Hastings & St Leonards

Following the success of last year's Do IT programme of workshops for young people, this year's programme will be even better.

Young musicians will be able to take part in workshops led by international musicians and Rythmix - the Youth Action Music Group for the South East.

Young people will also be able to take part in workshops which will lead into performances in some of the bigger Coastal Currents events and beyond.  The Do It brochure is due out in July - make sure you don't miss out on some of the high quality events, projects and workshops on offer.

Workshops will be held at the White Rock Theatre and St. Mary's in the Castle and other locations in the town.

The 'Do It' programme is part of the Polycentre Europeen de Creation Artistique - a partnership with Sotteville-les-Rouen, Amiens, Bethune, Hastings, Tunbridge Wells and Brighton, with the English partners creating a virtual creation centre.

Hastings Borough Council is grateful for the support of a number of local agencies and particularly grateful for the support from the Arts Council England - South East in the development of this programme.
