There really can't have been more exciting times in our town. There is just so much going on that even About finds it difficult to keep up. But most of all we have this once in a lifetime chance to make a dramatic difference to the fortunes of Hastings & St Leonards.
The major regeneration projects that are outlined in this edition are a big part of this new dawn. We have the opportunity to add the best of modern design and architecture to the best of what our town already has. We have the resources to ensure from now on that only the best will do for Hastings & St Leonards.
Striking new buildings in our town centre as well as the millennium community prestige housing project starting in Ore Valley are all part of changing the image of Hastings & St Leonards. There are still people outside of the town (perhaps even a few inside too) whose image of Hastings & St Leonards is of a place that has seen better days, a place with social problems.
The regeneration programme allows us to create another image - of a town that's changing, the town where things are really happening. That's the image that will encourage investment in our town, new businesses, new jobs and new prosperity. We have to make sure local people have the skills and support to take up these new job opportunities.
Our Town Conference held in the Spring and reported here in About discussed all this and there was a large degree of general agreement of what needs to be done in physical regeneration and in social improvement. There was also a strong feeling that we must get on with it.
All of us have a responsibility to do just that to get all these great plans moving. As ever About can be relied on to keep us all up to date with the progress.
