Millennium Community

Local people have been inspired by the plans for Hastings Millennium Community, with many volunteering to give their expertise and time to the project, which is funded by English Partnerships.

What do you want from the Millennium Community Project?

Sustainability

  • a sustainable, environmentally friendly, active, fun, friendly and thriving community at affordable prices
  • a craft-led partially self-sufficient society - an island of low environmental impact homes, surrounded by paths and gardens
  • provide most of what you need - home, work etc that is in walking distance, or at least do not rely on the car
  • using renewable energy sources

Identity

  • a modern town and community and making the most of its history
  • lasting improvements to the community not just bricks and mortar

Community

  • cultivate community spirit, civic pride, self improvement and expectation among residents
  • communities where people feel connected to each other and their shared environment

Housing

  • Affordable housing for local people/first time buyers
  • New homes for old. Knock down some of the present unwanted unsuitable and badly planned housing and rebuild

Economics

  • Promoting the visual arts - exhibition spaces and affordable studios

Environment

  • An area to encourage people to grow food organically
  • High quality - especially urban design, open spaces, landscaping
  • To blend in visually, complement and enhance the local architecture and environment
  • Promote environmental awareness
  • Good use of derelict land
  • Community facilities
  • Architecture courses/school in Hastings

Transport

  • Sustainable community with integrated transport links
  • Reduce car use
  • Good public/ community transport

Councillor Mike Bigg, Cabinet Member responsible for Regeneration and Tourism, said:

"Hastings is one of only seven towns in the country to be awarded Millennium Community status. Local people will have the opportunity to influence every decision that is made on how both the physical and community development is achieved."
"Don’t say we've heard all this before and nothing"
