Local Nature

Thirty pupils from Westerleigh school took part in a specially designed nature hunt during March to mark the official launch of Old Roar Gill Nature Reserve.

The results of the nature hunt will be uploaded onto the new Wildspace! Website, which has been designed to bring together all the information about the town’s wildlife, green and wild spaces.

The Council is keen to get as many people as possible involved in the town’s green projects, whether it is working as part of a community group to improve access and information, or just to go and visit them.

Councillor Trevor Webb, Cabinet Member responsible for Leisure and Amenities, said:

"There are already three Local Nature Reserves in Hastings & St Leonards - Filsham Reedbed, Marline Valley and St Helens Wood."
"We’ve been working with English Nature, and the local community to find out which areas should be our next priorities and have decided to declare four Local Nature Reserves – Hastings Country Park and Churchwood will be declared this year, in addition to Old Roar Gill, and South Saxons Wetlands should be declared in 2004."
"One of the most exciting things is how these green areas can become educational resources for schools. We’ve been helping Filsham Valley School with a project on South Saxons Wetlands and running educational projects with Churchwood and Robsack schools."
"We will be continuing to develop the website with all the information on the town’s green spaces and I hope that people will send us details about the wildlife and nature they see in Hastings & St Leonards."
