The Future Consultation

The Future of Hastings & St Leonards

Thousands of brochures and leaflets were snapped up by visitors to the exhibitions, and 4000 local people gave their views and ideas to us, during the four week consultation about the Future of Hastings & St Leonards.

Over 35 local events and exhibitions were held during November 2002 to find out what people thought of the plans which aim to tackle the physical regeneration of the town and its social and economic problems.

The five plans which made up the consultation are:

1 Hastings Millennium Community project

Hastings Millennium Community project

This aims to build new neighbourhoods on the disused land around five stations across the town, and building new stations at West Marina and Glyne Gap so that all the sites could be linked by a metro. The scheme could put Hastings on the national map as an example of how environmentally friendly neighbourhoods can be built to create 21st Century communities.

Over 80% of people supported the Millennium Community plans

2 The MBM masterplan

3 A Housing Renewal Area in St Leonards

Council Leader Jeremy Birch, said:

"This was the biggest consultation that the town has ever seen and residents’ responses and interest in the ideas for the future of Hastings & St Leonards were really enthusiastic."
"We received well over 1300 written replies as well as comments from people attending the events. All these will be taken into account as we develop each project."
"I believe we are arriving at a general consensus about how our town can be revived. The big task now is to turn these strategies and plans into a living reality and really start the transformation of Hastings & St Leonards."

Congratulations to Caryl Hosein who won the hamper in our prize draw after she filled in our Community Strategy questionnaire.

More results on this web site soon and full results will be available in June.
