Welcome

There was great anticipation across the town with the announcement of what was described as "a new dawn for Hastings" about six months ago. The government had responded with a commitment of large sums of money to support the five-point plan to revive the town that had been drawn up by the local councils and the regional development agency (SEEDA).

In those few short months substantial progress has been made:

  • A town centre shop has been acquired for a Regeneration Shop where anyone can go to find out details of the five-point plan and other local regeneration projects,
  • A large building running between Robertson Street and Cambridge Road has been bought to house the Media Centre where new small creative businesses can start and hopefully grow,
  • The university centre is on track to receive its first students in September 2003 located in town centre buildings,
  • Terms have been agreed for the purchase of the Station Yard which can be utilised for expansion of the university centre and for employment and residential uses,
  • BT has nominated the Hastings area as one of only eight locations nationwide to promote Broadband giving the fastest internet connections for businesses, community facilities and households,
  • A broadband demonstration centre is being planned for the town centre to explain the benefits to all those interested and two people are being recruited to advise businesses on their broadband and new technology requirements,
  • Hastings has been named as one of three new Millennium Communities which will mean 1,000 sustainably developed new homes largely on previously used sites by 2012 with major community involvement as the project develops,
  • Internationally renowned planners, MBM, are working on a new masterplan for the area which will be unveiled for public consultation this Autumn.

I hope everyone will agree that this is pretty good going in such a short time - but as we have all agreed turning the town round is probably a ten-year task. One thing you can be sure of is that Hastings Borough Council will continue to be at the heart of this revival.
