A second 'Walking Bus', which allows groups of pupils to walk to school in safety, has been set up by parents at Sacred Heart School, taking the total in the town to three. Four pupils make up the new route which leaves from the junction of Collier and Croft Road, walks along Bembrook Road, down past Torfield allotments and then across Old London Road with the crossing patrol.
Councillor Paul Silverson, Cabinet Member responsible for Transport, is delighted that another route has been set up. He said: "We are really keen to work with schools to set up walking buses. We give these schemes our support and help, provide fluorescent jackets and rucksacks and full road safety training for volunteers and for the children taking part.
"Studies have shown that children are taking less and less exercise and a walking bus not only allows the children to walk to school with adults in full safety, but also helps them to learn good road sense, use up some energy before class and also helps to cut down congestion at the school gates - as parents drop off children - which is always a safety concern. "I am really pleased that we now have three walking buses in the town and I hope that other schools will take up our offer of help and support and set up their own walking buses."
