Alexandra Park

Alexandra Park

The Café is now open and serving snacks and drinks each day from 10.00am to 4.00pm (week days) 10.00am to 5.00pm (weekends). On several occasions during July and August the café stayed opened to support evening music entertainment events which took place at the bandstand.

The Council hopes to attract a yearround operator who would also take the opportunity to open as a bistro during the evenings.

Please contact Amenities Manager Peter Mead for more information.

Bowling Green Toilets, Tennis Pavilion and Bandstand

All these buildings have now been refurbished and finished in cream and green.

The Tennis Pavilion toilets have been improved to include disabled and baby changing facilities. The Park Ranger office will be sited here and works will soon be in progress to support that. Minor works to the rustic façade of the building and some plants will be added later in the year.

Bowling Green Shelter

There has been some need for a central information point for visitors to, and regular users of, the park. The bowling green shelter is in need of repair and it would then be converted to include display and information boards, lighting and disabled access. Changes to the profile of the adjacent path will enable disabled access via a small ramp through the current entrance.

Path network

Most of the work to resurface and improve the work in the Lower Park area is now complete. The work will make access for wheelchairs and pushchairs much easier.

York stone has been used for steps at the Bethune Way entrance and the dry stone wall bridge by the rose garden. Iron railings will be installed at steps entrances and to protect the drop now created by the rose garden. This will remain fenced off as a safety precaution until decorative railings can be installed.

Middle Lawn

The middle lawn will shortly be reseeded and will be ready for use next Summer. The method of using the silt dug up from the ponds, mixed with organic matter has been very successful and will result in a 'lush green' lawn.

Ponds

The ponds in the Lower Park have been massively improved and are now an excellent environment for the fish and other wildlife. Already wildlife is re-establishing itself and without any help from anyone. The dipping platforms will be used by local schools for education purposes.

The Boating Lake will shortly be the subject of a structural survey and a number of options are being looked at.

Queens Lodge Toilets

There has been a delay in demolishing these toilets because they are within a 'conservation area'. Ideas and plans for the site will be drawn up shortly.

Information Boards

Information Boards will be installed at every entrance to the Park with information on events, the restoration project and the Park's history. The Friends of Alexandra Park are currently working with the Council to find the best signs to use.

Playground

Ideas for the playground were discussed extensively with parents and children as well as other parties. Work is due to start in mid-September and will take around 8-10 weeks.

Councillor Trevor Webb, Cabinet Member responsible for Leisure and Amenities is delighted with the progress that has been made in the Park.

"So much work has been carried out this year and the Park is beginning to look absolutely stunning."
"It's been wonderful to see so many events taking place - the Play Days have been as busy and successful as ever and the newly refurbished bandstand has been a great venue for local bands to play in the evening, particularly now the café is in use again."
"The Friends of the Park have been invaluable in assisting the project. We are really keen to continue working with them and encourage other people with an interest in the Park to join them and us in continuing to revitalise this important public space."
