| Hastings & St Leonards was officially the sunniest place on our stretch of coast last year basking in a whopping 60 hours more than our closest rivals Eastbourne! So what better than to manufacture our very own suntan lotion, promote safe sun bathing... and name it after local landmark the Harbour Arm! | ![]() |
Last year, we created a national first when our lifeguards started dishing out free suntan lotion on the beach to protect residents and visitors from the sun; the move was lapped up by local, regional and national press and Hastings & St Leonards stole the headlines during a sizzling summer weekend last year. Incidentally, the publicity that the town received through that coverage was outstanding, and the town enjoyed one of its best summers for years.
This year, the Council has gone one step further and will be selling whole bottles of the lotion. The partnership between the Council and local toiletries manufacturer IT&C means that the unique Hastings & St Leonards suntan lotion will be under half the price of branded lotions you will find in the shops - a bargain £2.95.
Add to this the fact that it has been endorsed by SCaRF - the Skin Cancer Research Fund and of every bottle sold, 20p will be given to the charity to support its research work. It also has the Council seal of approval on it.
Councillor Mike Bigg, Cabinet Member responsible for Regeneration & Tourism, said:
"We are the first Council to actively encourage people to be safe in the sun by making our own suntan lotion. I am delighted that our efforts have been endorsed by SCaRF and that we can not only donate money made to this charity, but can also offer the suntan lotion at a far more realistic price than many other brands."
You can buy the sunguard at our Information Centres, the Castle, or at the East and West Hill Lifts.
