Pelham Boulevard

Cosmopolitan, European, elegant - just some of the words that have been used to describe the Pelham Boulevard project which will create an attractive area of space along our seafront and improve access between the old and new town.

Anyone who walks along the pavement between Castle Street and George Street, particularly during the summer, will know that because it is so narrow it can be a struggle to get through!

This new scheme aims to widen the pavement to Castle Street and George Street which will complement St Mary in the Castle and Pelham Crescent, and give much needed space for pedestrian flow.

Comprehensive consultations have been taking place to ensure that everyone has a chance to have their say about the project, raise concerns and make suggestions that may improve the scheme.

Consultation has been taking place with both residents and traders in the area, to ensure that everyone has a chance to have their say about the project, raise concerns and make suggestions that may improve the scheme.

Councillor Mike Bigg, Cabinet Member responsible for Regeneration & Tourism, said:

"This is a really innovative scheme that will improve this important bit of our seafront and add something else which is unique to the town. Pelham Arcade is thought to be one of the first underground shopping arcades in western Europe, and Pelham Crescent itself is in the top 6% of architecturally important sites in the country."
"We want to open up the seafront for our visitors and residents so they can enjoy the Boulevard experience"

which may, in time, mean that they can stop and relax for a refreshment at one of the many pavement cafe's on their journey from the Town to the Old Town.

"We got a great response to the consultation - both from people who attended the meetings and from the response slips sent to us. Those opinions and ideas are really important and we will keep you up to date with progress as it is made."
