Play Street for Farley Bank

Children at Farley Bank are to benefit from a new scheme which will see the street officially become a 'play street'.

The scheme will result in the far end of Farley Bank effectively becoming a play area to allow children to play safely in the street.

The scheme will mean that all vehicles, except bicycles, the Fun Bus and any vehicle which needs to access the parking bays, will be prohibited from entering the area between 8am and sunset. A 20mph speed limit will also be applied to the whole of Farley Bank.

The idea of a play street in Farley Bank was first suggested in 1997. Since then local residents have been consulted by 1066 Housing Association. There were initially concerns about how a play street could impact on the movement of vehicles and the access to parking bays. A second round of consultation addressed these concerns and the response from local residents was then very positive.

Councillor Paul Silverson, Cabinet Member responsible for Transport, said:

"This is the very first road in Hastings & St Leonards to become a designated 'play street'. Children in the area will now be able to play safely in the street thanks to new speed limits and vehicle access restrictions.
"During the summer, play activities took place weekly on the street, and 152 local children took part in them. There is clearly a need for extra play space for children. With funding from Sure Start, the street will be a designated play area with additional seating and greenery."
