There are towns called Hastings all over the world, but the one in the spotlight at the moment is Hastings Sierra Leone, in West Africa. The town was torn apart in the recent civil war, and its economy is in shreds.
LOAF - a group made up from local churches who take on a project each year - is working hard to raise money to help rebuild the town. There is a desperate need for bridges to be repaired and upgraded so that the local people can get goods in and out of the town and get to and from work in Freetown. Local engineer Derek Tomblin has visited Hastings SL and is now drawing up plans for a community centre, and for the reconstruction of 15 bridges. LOAF is hoping that groups here in Hastings, such as businesses, schools or church groups, will be interested in sponsoring one of the bridges, which start at £500.
LOAF has already raised £18,000, which will enable the local population to start rebuilding their town. A container-load of goods and equipment, including £1,000 worth of tools donated by the Builders Centre, went out in February. LOAF will be raising more money through a sponsored walk on May Day Bank Holiday Monday.
