During October, residents were given the opportunity to visit a street market with a difference - it was Council run and aimed to give anyone interested information about projects in the pipeline, what services we provide and the opportunity to ask Councillors and Council staff questions.
The event was held as part of Local Democracy Week, which is a nationwide event. Traditional market stalls were set up with information on traffic calming, planning, marketing, local democracy, community issues and regeneration. The Young Persons Council also took part.
The street market was a resounding success - hundreds of people visited the stalls and quizzed Councillors and staff about a wide range of issues. Some questions could not be answered on the spot and a written response was sent to those whose query could not immediately be dealt with.
The idea was the brainchild of Councillor Jay Kramer, Cabinet Member responsible for Modernisation, who said:
"We thought that the day was a great success, and we are definitely hoping to repeat it in the future. "Many hundreds of people stopped to talk to Councillors and staff to learn about the work of the Council and were especially interested in our plans to revitalise the town."

Many hundreds of helium filled balloons were handed out to children at the market. Inevitably, some of these escaped as their young owners let go of them! On Monday morning, after the event, the Council received a phone call from a farmer in Settle, North Yorkshire to say that a Hastings Borough Council balloon had landed on her farm!
