Hastings Businesses - Save Money and get Greener

Small and medium sized business in Hastings & St Leonards are being invited to take advantage of a scheme which will not only help them save them money, but make them greener, too!

The Hastings Sustainable Business Partnership (HSBP) is being re-launched and will be offering businesses free environmental surveys. These surveys will focus on energy and water use, waste management, transport and purchasing and will result in a series of recommendations to reduce their impact on the environment which may also increase profits.

St Leonards firm, Madden & Layman is one of the companies which took part in a survey. The firm accomplished a 20% reduction in energy consumption and has since achieved an international accreditation for reaching a high standard of environmental management. Steve Williams of Madden & Layman, said:

Support from the Hastings Sustainable Business Partnership helped us on the way to achieving this accreditation. The survey pointed us in the right direction to ensure the required standards were met and also helped us save money.

The benefits to businesses taking part in the scheme will be:

  • Practical suggestions for saving money for example reducing waste disposal and energy bills
  • Increased competitiveness
  • Increased efficiency
  • Improved environmental performance
  • An improved reputation
  • Advice on financial assistance
  • Free training and advice on environmental issues

Councillor Mike Bigg, Cabinet Member responsible for Regeneration, said:

"Over 30 local firms have already taken advantage of free environmental surveys which helped them identify where savings could be made and how environmental performance could be improved. The Council now wants to encourage and support more local companies in the town to improve their environmental standards whilst achieving business benefits for themselves."

HSBP is a partnership between Hastings Borough Council, East Sussex County Council, Ten Sixty Six Enterprise and the Environment Agency. For more information, environmental advice or to find out about the surveys please contact the Sustainable Business Partnership Co-ordinator on 781486
