Shorething

This year saw Hastings & St Leonards' first ever festival of the sea - Shorething.

Birdman takes the Plunge
A birdman takes the plunge, watched by thousands from the promenade and the beach

Despite the awful July weather, the event has been hailed as a success by organisers and by those who went to watch. A huge group of onlookers gathered to watch the birdmen (and women) throw themselves off the pier and later enjoyed the traditional tubman competition.

Young people took part in sport, art and play, others took advantage of watersports such as rowing, canoeing and sailing. There was also the 1066m swim from the Harbour Arm to the Pier and back. Local arts group covered the seafront in flags and banners which they had worked on with local children and were also responsible for the ever popular Walking the Fish.

The festival was supported by Hastings Council and other businesses. It was organised by individuals in the town.
