Sailing into the Limelight

View of Marine Court from the Sea

There are plans afoot to highlight the 1930's Marine Court and the traders underneath the colonnade. At a meeting in July, residents and traders were shown a demonstration by the Council's lighting consultants of how the east end would look if floodlit at night.

This end of the building likened to The Queen Mary as it looks like an ocean liner, could be seen well beyond the pier while the floodlights were on. There are also plans to improve lighting under the western colonnade.

Council Leader, Jeremy Birch, said:

"This meeting followed on from one I chaired in the Town Hall some months ago, where we looked at what conservation of a building actually means today, even down to the size of windows!"

At the meeting we were able to put Marine Court, a listed building, in the context of the development of 20th Century architecture. Everyone accepted that this is a landmark building, not just for Hastings & St Leonards but also for the whole of the south coast. To be able to show residents a demonstration of the proposed new lighting scheme was an added bonus."

The Council is to commission consultants to draw up a conservation plan for the building. Residents will be consulted as to how to best preserve and enhance the special architectural character of this remarkable building.
