Keep on Recycling Your Paper

Norman Good the Litter Bin

Nearly 700 tonnes of waste paper have been recycled in just four months since the Council Introduced kerbside recycling scheme in April.

That figure works out at just over 7 tonnes of waste paper collected every day by Onyx. BUT WE STILL NEED MORE. Ideally, to reach our targets we need to be recycling around 8.5 tonnes per day and the Council is working with Onyx to try and further improve the service.

In November a scheme will be introduced to allow residents in flats, who wish to take part in the recycling scheme, to join the 24,000 homes that are already doing their bit. In Hastings Old Town the Council has worked with residents to introduce a community scheme, this too will be introduced in November.

Some schools will be approached and invited to take part so that children can get involved with the scheme. Of particular interest are schools within areas that currently do not have a kerbside collection, so that children can bring in waste paper from their homes to recycle it.

There is also going to be yet another Hastings & St Leonards National first. For those who use the train and like to read a newspaper on their way home, a recycling box will be placed in the station to drop the finished newspaper into! Add to this the bring sites around the town and Hastings & St Leonards could soon be among the greenest!

A quick reminder!

You can recycle all newspapers, magazines, telephone directories (except Yellow Pages), catalogues and junk mail.

You can't recycle cardboard, waxed paper, carbon paper, Yellow Pages and wrapping paper.

PLEASE, PLEASE take your recycling box to the EDGE or curtilage of your property as this will help Onyx do the job faster and we can look at getting other areas involved in the scheme. If you are physically unable to take your recycling box to the edge of your property, give the Council a call on 781338 and we'll make sure that you can take part in the assisted scheme. This means the box will be collected for you from your point of storage. Councillor Trevor Webb, Cabinet Member responsible for Community Safety & Quality of Life, said:

"The scheme has gone relatively smoothly and we are delighted that so many people have showed us their support by using their recycling boxes."
"We are still not quite meeting our targets and we need you to go all out to help us go green. We are looking at introducing different schemes in other parts of the town which aren't currently benefiting from the recycling scheme."
"Thanks to everyone taking part and keep up the good work _ let's make this scheme a huge success!"
