Community arts group Dab, who helped make the Fisherman's Arch, worked with local children to make the flags you saw fluttering around the pier and seafront this summer and were also responsible for the Punch & Judy Booths have had a busy summer!
Not only have they been working with children on play schemes, they have made a radio programme called `Get with it' with children and young people about all the summer activities.
Dab have also been responsible for `Punchline'. Children were given a puppet booth which they were able to paint and they made their own puppets. They then put on performances along the seafront.
Dab's roots are in local carnival fun and they worked closely with Brighton based Same Sky who brought us magical shows in Alexandra Park, Headlands at Rock-a-Nore and the ever popular Lantern Tree I and II at St Mary in the Castle. Their work has been given a boost by support and funding from local organisations. Hastings Voluntary Action supplied them with a video camera and mini disc, followed by a Hastings Borough Council Awards for All grant which will enable them to carry out a mixed media installation in Hastings station next year. Look out for the postcard campaign around the town as Dab and Connex have joined forces to offer prizes for the most original ideas on the back of a postcard! If you would like to be involved, watch out for postcards in cafes, the station and the library.
Recently DAB received a Regional Arts Lottery Programme grant from South East Arts for help with organisational development. Chair Carolyn Jackson said:
"This grant is going to make a huge difference to us. We will be able to streamline the organisation and gain access to equipment and training in video and audio editing. We are keen to work with the whole community and especially those who are excluded in some way."
