The Old Town is always a lively place, but it really comes into its own during the second week of August _ Old Town Carnival Week! And this year was no exception, despite the blazing hot temperatures of the previous week being replaced by much cooler, and, on some days, much wetter, weather. Around the country, carnivals seem to be in decline _ even Brighton didn't have a procession this year. Yet, in Hastings, Old Town Carnival Week continues to go from strength to strength, with new activities and events being added each year.
Although the carnival itself is the highlight of the week for many, there is so much more to Old Town Carnival Week than just the procession. From Arts Shows to a time trial on a butcher's bike up one of the steepest hills in the Old Town, from coffee mornings and cream teas to a treasure trail (aka pub crawl!), from a talk about a Norman knight to a pets service (both held in All Saints Church!), from a fashion show to a pram race (aka pub crawl _ again!), everyone has their own favourite.
What makes Old Town Carnival Week so special is that there is so much going on _ and, even more importantly, it's all organised by the local community, for the community and for visitors alike. It's this community spirit in action that gives the week its unique character, as although Hastings Council plays an active role behind the scenes, all of the events are run by volunteers. The programme is jointly co-ordinated by the Hastings Old Town Carnival Association, and the Old Hastings Preservation Society, and most of the activities are run by local charities, various community groups, and even individuals. Hastings & St. Leonards is indeed lucky to have such a strong community spirit, across the town _ it really does make this such a special place to live. And Old Town Carnival Week is only one example of the spirit of Hastings & St Leonards, there are many, many more events, happening throughout the year. Sometimes quirky, sometimes bohemian, sometimes irreverent _ but always great fun.
