Four Neighbourhood Wardens are now on the prowl in Hollington in a bid to help cut down on crime in the area.
The three Wardens and a co-ordinator, will patrol the area regularly to help combat crime and nuisance. They will provide the very visible and local presence that many residents seek.
The Wardens will not replace the police. They will have no additional powers of arrest and will not be expected to physically intervene in dangerous situations. They will notify the police of incidents and act as witnesses as necessary.
The Wardens will develop neighbourhood watch and other initiatives to actually involve residents in dealing with anti-social behaviour and crime in the area.
They will work closely with the Hollington Forum and a steering group has been set up comprising the seven residents’ associations, 1066 Housing Association, the police and Tesco to work with the Wardens. Councillor Trevor Webb, Cabinet Member responsible for Community Safety & Quality of Life, said:
This is an innovative scheme that we hope will be a huge benefit to the Hollington area. The local community is very enthusiastic about the project and will participate in a steering committee to oversee the Wardens’ work
Chair of Four Courts Residents’ Association, Dennis Shine, said:
I think that it is an absolutely marvellous scheme. To have Neighbourhood Wardens will have a stabilising influence on the area. We can see this being an ideal thing to have in Hollington and it will be great asset.
In partnership with residents, we really can make this scheme work. Anybody in greater Hollington can come to us with a problem and we, as a team, will help them to resolve it as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Community Warden Team Leader
I’ve lived in Hastings & St Leonards for 20 years. It’s my home town now. I wanted to be on the team because I believe there is a strong community spirit here and I would like to help make it even stronger.
Hastings Borough Council and all the other agencies cannot solve every problem themselves - the community must play an active role. I want us to build good relations with people in the community so that it becomes a safer environment to live in.
I want us to be seen to walk the estate and talk to all the residents to find out about their problems and help deal with them. I’m also looking forward to the fresh air and to keeping fit at the same time!
