The Council is continuing its campaign to drive vehicle speeds down to make our roads safer for pedestrians and cyclists.
During the past year, two primary schools have benefited from school safety zones outside their gates. Both Elphinstone School, Parker Road and Castledown School, Priory Road now have a 20mph zones - making the area safer for children.
Work is underway at Dudley Infants School, on Harold Road, and speed cushions and pinch points are being installed to make sure that drivers keep their speeds down.
This year, (2001/2002) the Council has set aside £175,000 for traffic management: £103,000 for traffic calming schemes, £31,000 for traffic and transport initiatives and £41,000 for a programme to create safer routes for schools.
There are 6 schemes scheduled for the current year including traffic calming along Elphinstone Road, Harold Road (Phase II), Little Ridge Avenue (Phase II), Old Church Road, Parkstone Road and Parker Road (Phase II).
Councillor Paul Silverson, Cabinet Member responsible for Transport, said:
Driving down vehicle speeds in the town is an important priority for the Council. There is a huge number of road accidents in the town and across East Sussex, and we are involved in a variety of initiatives to encourage drivers to slow down to ensure that pedestrians and cyclists can feel safe on our roads.
We have installed speed humps, cushions and pinch points along roads which residents have had concerns about and put up temporary ‘Kill Your Speed Signs’ at residents’ requests. We hope that the public continue informing us about their concerns about traffic speeds – so that we can continue to help manage vehicle speeds in Hastings & St Leonards.”
