A big thankyou to everyone who has supported our kerbside paper recycling scheme - which is in line with our targets.
The 26,000 homes taking part in the scheme have collected:
Week 1 - 47 tonnes
Week 2 - 42.2 tonnes
Week 3 - 36.96 tonnes
Week 4 - 35.90 tonnes
Plans to increase recycling in other areas More measures to encourage greater recycling efficiency around the town are now being considered. The Council is currently consulting with residents who are not included in the kerbside scheme to find out where mini recycling sites could be situated. We will bring you news of these in the next edition of About.
Yellow Pages The Council has also been in contact with Yellow Pages - which cannot be recycled because of the dye in its pages. It is hoped that we can find some way around this problem so that they too can be recycled.
What does curtilage mean? There has been some confusion about our instruction to put boxes at the curtilage of your property. This means at the edge or boundary of the front of your property - but please don’t put them on the pavement as pedestrians may trip over them.
The assisted scheme Some residents have contacted us because they are physically unable to move their black recycling boxes to the edge of their properties. We have now put a scheme in place in consultation with our contractors Onyx to help with this. We would like residents who are genuinely unable to lift or move the boxes to contact us on the recycling hotline (781338) to see if we can help them.
Councillor Trevor Webb, Cabinet Member responsible for Community Safety & Quality of Life, said:
We are so pleased with the response to the scheme and would like to thank everyone who is taking part. We hope that we can also improve recycling facilities in other parts of the town - and are currently consulting with residents on other area.
We hope to collect and dispose of 2,200 tonnes of waste paper per year - and are currently bang on target!
If you are interested in the assisted scheme, have any queries about the kerbside scheme or any suggestions for sites where mini-recycling sites could be situated in your area, please call the recycling hotline on 781338. Don’t forget - you can recycle your About magazine!
