Neighbourhood Wardens will soon be operating in Hollington, following a £146,000 government grant.
Three Wardens and a co-ordinator will patrol the area regularly to help combat crime and nuisance. They will provide the very visible and local presence that residents have told the Council that they want. The Wardens will not be a replacement for the police. They will have no additional powers of arrest and will not be expected to physically intervene in dangerous situations. They will notify the police of incidents and act as witnesses as necessary.
The Wardens will develop neighbourhood watch and other initiatives to actually involve residents in dealing with anti-social behaviour and crime in the area.
The will work closely with the Hollington forum and a steering group will be set up comprising the seven residents’ associations, 1066 Housing Association, the police and Tesco to work with the Wardens. Council Leader Jeremy Birch, said: “We are very pleased that we have succeeded with our bid to fund a team of Neighbourhood Wardens. The local community is very enthusiastic about the project and will participate in a steering committee to oversee the Wardens’ work. This project is a major contribution to making local areas safer.
Chair of Four Courts Residents Association, Dennis Shine, said: I think that it is an absolutely marvellous scheme. To have Neighbourhood Wardens will have a stabilising influence on the area. We can see this being an ideal thing to have in Hollington and it will be a great asset.” For more information contact John Hawes on 783220
