A massive new scheme to encourage recycling of paper is due to begin in April. The kerbside recycling scheme will allow 26,000 homes across the town to do their bit for the environment without even having to leave home!
How will it work?
Onyx, the Council’s contractor will provide a fortnightly collection of paper. Each household in the selected area will receive a plastic box for storing all types of paper including magazines, newspapers, catalogues and junk mail. Residents will be asked to put items for recycling into the box at fortnightly intervals, and take them to the edge of their property for collection. The majority of collections will take place on the same day as their present refuse collection.
What can you recycle?
What you can’t recycle

Why do it?
The Government now requires all local authorities to have a high rate of recycling and to encourage sustainability. Hastings & St Leonards recycling performance is low and the Council is determined to move towards achieving a green environment and wants to make it as easy as possible for the town’s residents to do their bit.
When does it start?
The recycling boxes, along with a leaflet explaining more about the scheme and calendars with collection dates on them, are due to be delivered in two stages. The first stage will be the week commencing April 9th and the second stage on April 16th.
The first collections will take place two weeks later. Those that received their box on April 9th will have a collection on April 23rd, those who received the box on April 16th will get a collection on May 7th.
What else can you do?
The Council also plans to introduce more recycling points in the town. Earlier this year the site at B&Q in Ore village was reinstated and a further eleven possible recycling sites for glass and paper only have been identified in St Leonards. A further fourteen possible sites have been identified in the Old Town and the town centre.
Councillor Trevor Webb, Cabinet Member responsible for Community Safety and Quality of Life, said: “The Government has set targets which require local authorities to double their 1998/99 recycling percentage which means we need to be recycling 12 per cent of our rubbish by 2003. “We want to reach this target and improve our recycling standards. We hope that bringing the scheme to people’s doorsteps will result in greater recycling efficiency.
We need to preserve our environment and make it more sustainable. This is an important move towards achieving that. Although some parts of the town will not benefit from the service initially, we are looking to change this by developing community supported schemes and creating more ‘bring sites’ around the town. We are hoping to provide a possible pilot scheme serving Houses in Multiple Occupation as well as further educational and promotional activities.
