Hastings Poster goes National!

A poster designed by nine year old West St Leonards, pupil Kate Nelmes, is shortly going to be on show all around the UK’s coastline.

The Council invited children from schools around the town to enter a competition to design a poster for clean beaches. The children were asked to incorporate points from the Waterside Code such as taking litter home and protecting wildlife and water, in their poster design.

Kate’s poster was the overall winner – and will be taken away to be displayed at beaches which have a Seaside Award or Blue Flag.

Ten other children from around the town also won goody bags and certificates for their designs.

The invitation was sent by the Council to the town’s schools following the bid for the prestigious Seaside Award – which is judged by the Tidy Britain Group. Hastings beach had to pass 29 different tests including cleanliness of water and the beach and safety. Once an Award has been made, it is reviewed annually to make sure that the standard has been upheld.

Councillor Trevor Webb, Cabinet Member responsible for Community Safety and Quality of Life, said: “This was a wonderful opportunity for us to work with our local schools and promote the importance of health and safety of the beach. All the entrants put a great deal of effort into their designs and I know the judges had a really difficult time choosing the winner.

“Congratulations to Kate – and all the other category winners.”
