Affordable Homes for Families

It’s all change at the Town Hall as a result of a scheme which aims to improve access, security and quality of service.

Work is now well underway to build twenty-one new homes on a derelict site in St Leonards.

The homes are being built in the heart of St Leonards on the corner of Cross Street and Western Road. They will either have three or four bedrooms, and they will all have a garden.

The scheme has been made possible through a partnership between Hastings Council, Moat Housing Association and the Housing Corporation and will provide much needed affordable rented family homes.

There is a desperate need for family houses in the town, and an important part of the Council’s Housing Strategy is to provide affordable three and four bedroom houses - the scheme at Western Road is one site that will offer this.

The work is due to be completed in November this year. Councillor John Humphries, Cabinet Member responsible for Housing, said: Building high quality affordable homes on derelict sites will help make a real difference in Central St Leonards which is an important area for regeneration under Single Regeneration Budget (SRB) 5.

This is a win-win combination of housing and regeneration, and developments like this also reduce pressure for building on Greenfield sites.

Adrian Barber, Area Manager for Moat Housing Society, said: This scheme will provide more homes, more jobs in construction, more custom for local shops and contribute to the improved safety of Western Road. We are delighted to be involved in this positive scheme for people in Hastings & St Leonards.

Other schemes in the town include ten homes being built at Redmayne Drive. The scheme has been funded by the Housing Corporation and a Social Housing Grant of £222,000 from the Council. The scheme is being carried out in partnership with Moat Housing Society.

Twenty four homes in poor condition have been bought by housing associations in the town, and with the help of a £1.5m Social Housing Grant from the Council have been refurbished. The homes being provided are available at affordable rent for families in housing need.
