Four Choices Leaflet

Have you seen this leaflet? It is your opportunity to have a say in the way the Council manages its decision-making structure. At the moment the 32 Members of the Council set budgets, policies and priorities within which day to day decisions are taken by a parliamentary style Cabinet of 10 Councillors, chaired by the Leader of the Council. These arrangements have been in place for about 18 months and have put the Council in a good position to adapt to future changes. Central Government is now suggesting four different possible structures and after a period of consultation, one of these will be adopted by the Council.

The four options are:
Option 1: Leader and Cabinet
Option 2: Directly Elected Mayor
Option 3: Directly Elected Mayor and Council Manager
Option 4: Committee system

You can see the differences between the options listed in the leaflet. Everyone in Hastings and St Leonards is invited to let us know their preferred option.

Changes to the structure will bring:

  • more opportunities for people to have a say in Council business
  • more informed and faster decisions about our services
  • more information about who is making decisions and why they are taken

In addition to the leaflet, we will also to holding discussion groups for people interested in having a greater say in the detail of the changes. If you are interested in taking part in one of these meetings, please contact Mary Clarke on the number below.

Further copies of the leaflet are available in the Hastings Information Centre in Priory Meadow, from this website, or you can ring the Scrutiny and Administrative Services Manager on 781718.
