Fifteen volunteers have taken the plunge and will be looking after our beach thanks to a joint scheme between the Council and the Marine Conservation Society.
The volunteers will be taking part in Adopt a Beach, an environmental scheme which aims to keep our beach clean and safe. The volunteers will help with seasonal surveys and clean ups and monitor the health of the beach. The group will gather at the beach four times a year to carry out surveys.
There will be a spring clean in April, a summer clean in June/July and a Christmas clean in mid December/January. On the third weekend in September, volunteers in Hastings, along with other towns all over the world, will be carrying out its Autumn clean.
Adopt a Beach is part of a national scheme to raise awareness of the problems and dangers of coastal and marine litter. All the information gathered will enable the volunteer group to identify local litter inputs and target the polluters responsible.
The scheme is funded by the National Lottery and aims to have 250 beaches adopted around the UK coast by the end of this year, making it the largest coastal environmental initiative.
Councillor John Humphries, Cabinet Member responsible for Community Participation, said: I am delighted that we have attracted so many volunteers to take part in this unique environmental initiative to make our beach an even better place. This is an opportunity for our local community to make a real impact on their immediate environment while having fun and learning more about marine landscape.
