Feature: MP's Report

Michael Foster MP

As MP I have a very special task on Christmas morning. Every year I have the pleasure of welcoming each of my new constituents at the Conquest maternity unit.

But this Christmas will be a special one for my family, as my wife Rosemary and I will also be welcoming to our festivities a new grandson.

Just like that first Christmas 2000 years ago, a new baby makes us reflect, perhaps on our past failings, but more importantly on the future we want to see.

This summer I asked students from our local schools what was their “2020 vision”, since ultimately the future is not only what we plan – but what young people do.

Just think of how last year, the Pier was abandoned; this year, with a new owner, it is a symbol of how things can change. And things are changing – mostly for the better. Our needs are being recognised, £millions being provided. We have been given the tools and it is up to us all to decide what the future should look like.

Some of my Christmas break will be spent catching up on my postbag. Many people are surprised to know that I read every letter I receive, and I always reply - eventually! Some letters tell me that things are getting better and that people are happy with the improvements that have been made. Others – and these are perhaps even more important – tell me what still needs to be done.

All our Christmas babies, individual as they are, depend on us to make our town a better place. So don’t forget to keep telling me what I, as the MP, can do to help.

I wish everyone in Hastings (including our visitors) a happy Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous New Year.
