It's a Dog's Life

the Council’s Dog Wardens were called to the rescue at Hastings Railway Station recently, when a dog wandered onto the line.

Julian, a nine month old German Shepherd cross had escaped from his Bembroke Road home and made his way to the station. Concerned Connex staff were unable to prevent him going onto the track. Lost and frightened, Julian took shelter beneath platform four - only inches from the live rail track which carries 750 volts.

Dog Warden Matt West said: “When we arrived at the scene we thought the dog had already touched the live rail and we feared it was dead. We were surprised and elated when we saw his leg move. A train at the platform had to be moved before the power could be switched off and we could go on to the track.

“Julian had squeezed himself into a very tight spot and was too scared to come out. Our primary concern was to get him away from danger as quickly as possible. It was a delicate operation but we were eventually able to get him out without causing too much disruption.”

Julian’s owner said: “We can’t thank the Dog Wardens enough. We thought that it was cats that have nine lives - we are now considering changing Julian’s name to Lucky!”
