the year old Burglary Action Teams (BATs) are winning the battle against burglars in the town!
Since their introduction, incidents have decreased dramatically and over 160 arrests have been made. the police expect to see a further decrease of 10 per cent next financial year.
BATs works by highlighting persistent offenders who are then targeted by all officers. they make sure bail conditions are complied with, and constantly monitor information of their activities.
BATs has resulted in greater liaison with councils, probation units and other services.
Chief Inspector Robin Smith introduced the BATs scheme to the Senlac division. He said: “Some offenders arrested are considered career criminals and they are responsible for the majority of burglaries in Senlac and indeed other divisions and forces.
“the targeting of such people is paying off and I am delighted with the drop in the number of burglaries. That means hundreds of people being spared the misery of coming home to ransacked houses.”
Councillor Trevor Webb, Cabinet Member responsible for Community Safety, said: “I am delighted that this initiative is proving so successful. Reducing burglary in the town is a key part of our Community Safety Strategy. People in Hastings & St Leonards can rest assured that we are doing all we can to provide a safe environment for them to live in and stamp out crime in our town.”
